What is preventing my Ford from starting?

Bad battery. Your car runs just fine once it's started because the alternator is providing enough electricity to keep the vehicle operating, but the battery is not holding a charge. The reason your car sometimes dies when the RPM's drop is because the alternator is not spinning as fast, and the battery has no power to cover the load.
