How do you get started with colored gels? Can they be portable? (Shoot on Vinyl bd's instead of muslin?)?

I meant.. Can you shoot with colored gels on anything portable? Vinyl is too stiff, and I'm afraid that muslin would just look like a wrinkly mess unless I toted a steamer with me everywhere.
